Disassembling the “Urban Mines” series: The “Gold-Plated Era” on Circuit Boards—Retrieving Precious Metals from Plating

“Your old cell phone holds real wealth—up to 600 grams of gold, 1000 grams of silver, and precious palladium and platinum can be extracted from every ton of computer motherboards. Modern automated technology uses precise ‘chemical scalpels’ to completely remove these precious metals, increasing the recycling rate by 30% compared to traditional methods, turning e-waste into an ‘urban mine.'”

Gold, silver, palladium… these shimmering metals are actually hidden in your old cell phone.

When we talk about e-waste recycling, the most exciting part is undoubtedly the word “precious metals.” On the surface of discarded circuit boards, those visible, shiny plating layers are often gold. However, how to completely “peel” off these thin, translucent gold layers was once a global challenge.

Where are these precious metals hidden?

Don’t be fooled by the green or brown appearance of circuit boards; true wealth flows within their “capillaries.” Statistics show that ordinary circuit boards contain approximately 10% to 40% copper, but what truly increases their value are the small amounts of precious metals. One ton of discarded computer motherboards can contain 80-600 grams of gold, 600-1000 grams of silver, and even precious palladium and platinum.

These precious metals are mainly distributed in:

* Gold: Abundantly found on chip pins, board interfaces (such as USB and PCI-E slots), CPU sockets, and the plating of various connectors.

* Silver: Commonly found in solder joints, keyboard membrane contacts, and inside some capacitors.

* Palladium/Platinum: Primarily found in multilayer ceramic capacitors and hard drive platters.

Removing Plating: Not Just a Simple “Gold Washing”

In the past, small workshops often used aqua regia or direct incineration to extract precious metals, but this produced large amounts of waste liquid and toxic fumes, causing significant environmental damage. Today, modern stripping technology has evolved into a sophisticated automated process combining chemical and physical methods.

Core Process: Dynamic Selective Stripping

For high-end circuit boards containing gold plating, modern automated equipment uses dynamic stripping technology.

1. Whole-board processing: Components don’t need to be removed beforehand; the entire circuit board is immersed in a specially formulated stripping solution.

2. Gentle tumbling: The rollers inside the equipment rotate slowly, allowing the circuit board to be evenly “bathed” in the solution. This ensures sufficient contact between the stripping solution and each gold-plated contact while avoiding mechanical damage to the substrate.

3. Precise peeling: By controlling the concentration and temperature of the solution, the stripping solution selectively dissolves only the surface gold, silver, and other precious metals, without corroding the underlying copper or nickel. This process is like using a precise “chemical scalpel” to completely peel off the thin layer of gold.

4. Enrichment and recovery: The solution containing precious metal ions undergoes electrolysis or displacement treatment, causing the precious metals to precipitate out in a sponge-like manner. Finally, after smelting, it becomes high-purity gold and silver ingots. Purity can typically reach over 99.9%.

Why automation is necessary?

Manual operation cannot precisely control the stripping time, easily leading to incomplete dissolution of precious metals or over-corrosion of the substrate. Automated equipment uses sensors to monitor solution concentration and metal ion content in real time, ensuring that every inch of the plating is fully utilized, increasing the recovery rate by more than 30% compared to traditional processes.

Plate stripping and refining is the first step in unlocking the “urban mine” of circuit boards. Once the surface gold is removed, the circuit board enters its next journey: component disassembly.
